Whether you are looking to take the first step in an equestrian career or are working towards a higher level, we at Foxes Riding School can help with all your training and exam requirements for BHS Stage 2.
This qualification will provide you with competencies to apply general principles for the management of horses’ health and well being. Working under regular but not constant supervision, you will be able to care for stabled and grass-kept horses during all seasons of the year. You will be able to ride an experienced horse or pony in the open as well as in a manège or indoor school.
When you achieve the Stage 2 Horse Knowledge, Care and/or Riding Certificate you will be able to progress to BHS Stage 3 Certificate in Horse Knowledge, Care and/or Riding. The Stage 2 Care Certificate is also recognised as a qualification in its own right and is a technical certificate for the Equine Apprenticeship. The Horse Knowledge and Riding Stage 2 is a prerequisite for the BHS Preliminary Teaching Test and is a component part of the BHS Assistant Instructor Certificate.

If you pay for 4 x weekly sessions (1hr ride & 1hr lecture each wk) you will receive the training at a reduced price £130 instead of £168

4 wks sessions Aug 3rd – 24th
Aug 3rd – Strapping and using a whisp
Aug 10th – Different rugs, how to fit correctly, how to store and maintain them
Aug 17th – Horses health. When to call the vet, different wounds, TPR etc
Aug 24th – Lameness, how to recognize a lame horse. Different boots and how to fit, eg brushing, tendon, over reach etc
4 wks sessions Aug 31st – Sept 21st
Aug 31st – How to put on stable bandages and prepare for travelling
Sept 7th – Plaiting manes with bands & thread, and plaiting the tail
Sept 15th – How to clip. Maintain clippers. Types of clip etc
Sept 21st – Grass land management. How to maintain good pasture, poisonous plants etc
4 wks sessions Sept 28th – Oct 19th
Sept 28th – How to fit a bridle and saddle
Oct 5th – Feeding
Oct 12th – Feeding continued
Oct 19th – Pulling manes, trimming heels etc. Worming programmes, vaccinations etc
4 wks sessions Oct 26th – Nov 16th
Oct 26th – The skeleton
Nov 2nd – The digestive system
Nov 9th – Shoeing and how to remove a shoe
Nov 16th – Fittening the horse and roughing off
